Israeli air forces launched an attack on a Hamas military post in the northern Gaza strip early this morning. Two rockets were fired at an al-Qassam Brigades military site, causing damages, Ma’an news agency reported.

The attack was a response to alleged gunfire from the Gaza Strip, directed towards the Israeli southern community of Netiv HaAsara. According to Israeli sources, several houses in Netiv HaAsara were hit, although no injuries were reported.

In a statement released early this morning, the Israeli army said,  "in response to the shooting, an IAF aircraft targeted a Hamas military post in the northern Gaza Strip, from where the shots were fired."

Whilst the Israeli government holds Hamas responsible for all activity within Gaza, various other extremist groups have been responsible for intermittent rocket fire from the enclave directed towards Israel over the last few months.

Many recent attacks have been claimed by a small political group called Sheikh Omar Hadid-Bayt al-Maqdis, with the alleged goal of undermining Hamas’ authority in Gaza.

Meanwhile, Hamas have taken measures to step back from armed activity and have denied involvement in past attacks. But, with the escalation of armed activity amongst smaller political groups, maintaining calm in Gaza has proven to be a challenge.
