Ahead of EU Middle East envoy Federica Mogherini’s visit to Israel, Israel’s Channel 7 reported Wednesday that the European Union was biased towards Palestine and against Israel.

Mogherini is in the region in an attempt to restart long stagnant negotiations between Israel and Palestine, which stalled in April last year.

Secretary General of The Palestinian National Initiative, Al-Mubadara, Dr. Mustafa Barghouti told the Palestine News Network that the EU was not biased towards either side, but rather that it was, "sick of Israel's behavior," which has become untenable, particularly following recent Israeli elections and the success of what many say is the most extremist and racist government in the Israeli history, that openly opposes Palestinian statehood, and jeopardises the possibility for lasting peace in the region.

In his conversation with the Palestine News Network, Barghouthi, recommended that the EU adopt Boycott Divestment and Sanction (BDS) policies to oppose Israel.

"The Boycott Divestment sanction approach should be used against Israel’s occupation to curb its discriminatory policies." He added that Israel has become very stringent in its official response to the movement, saying that "anyone who directs criticism on Israel is immediately considered an enemy."

Barghouthi said that the two initiatives mostly likely to succeed in pressurising Israel into change its policies are the BDS movement which threatens Israel’s economic viability. The other, he said, is the Palestinian Authority’s efforts to hold Israel accountable at the International Criminal Court.
