Settlers burn olive trees in retaliation to shooting

Israeli settlers burned agricultural land near the village of Burin, south of Nablus, in retaliation to an Israeli settler coming under fire earlier Wednesday morning. The incident comes during an escalation in tension and increased Israeli military presence in the West Bank.

Settlers from Yitzhar burned Palestinian agricultural land including dozens of olive trees in response to a female Israeli settler coming under fire while driving earlier on Wednesday morning.

The arson attack comes shortly before the annual olive harvest which is a vital source of income for many Palestinian farmers. During the attack, Israeli soldiers looked on and failed to stop the arsonists, Ma’an News Agencyreported.

The Yitzhar settlement is said to host the most extremist Israeli settlers in the West Bank, who frequently attack Palestinians, Palestinian property and the Israeli security forces in a practice known as 'price-tagging’. Settlers call the violence and destruction the 'price’ for the perceived restriction of settler freedoms on occupied Palestinian land.

As a result of these attacks, the Israeli army has deployed to nearby Beita and Einabus, south of Yitzhar, and have closed the entrances to the villages in an effort to stop Palestinian residents from entering or exiting "until further notice."

In addition, shops in nearby Huwwara have been ordered to close, and a curfew has been imposed on Huwwara’s main road which is the main route between Nablus and Ramallah.

The attacks come shortly after an arson attack in Duma near Nablus at the end of July in which 18-month-old Ali Dawabsheh and his 27-year-old mother and father died. The perpetrators have still not been arrested.

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UN OCHA) reported that settlers have carried out more than 142 attacks on Palestinians in East Jerusalem and the West Bank so far this year.
