A Palestinian has been shot and killed next to the Damascus Gate entrance to the Old City of Jerusalem after he allegedly stabbed an Israeli police officer.

According to The Times of Israel, the attack took place after an Israeli police officer stopped a Palestinian youth and asked him to show identification. The youth produced his ID card, then pulled out a knife, stabbing the officer in the neck.

A group of nearby Israeli officers saw the incident take place, and opened fire, killing the attacker, and wounding two Israeli officers in the process, including the officer who had been stabbed.

One police officer was seriously wounded and two others moderately wounded.

The attack, which took place at approximately 3:45 p.m. Saturday, is the second stabbing attack of the day in Jerusalem.

Ishaq Badran, 16, from Kafr Aqab was shot and killed near Damascus Gate Saturday morning after allegedly stabbing two ultra-Orthodox Jewish men who were on their way back from morning prayers at a local synagogue.

The Israel Police Foreign Press Spokesman has stated that the area surrounding Damascus Gate has been closed off following the second attack.

Eighteen Palestinians have been killed in the recent escalation of violence across Israel and the occupied Palestinian territories since Oct. 1. Four Israelis, two of whom were West Bank settlers, have been killed in the same period.
