Israel carried out three airstrikes in the northern Gaza Strip late Friday night in response to rockets fired from the Strip at southern Israel.

In southern Israeli city Sderot, one rocket landed near a bus station, causing damage. This was followed by another rocket fired at the city of Ashkelon. The rocket was intercepted by the Iron Dome Aerial defense system.

No injuries were reported in either case.

According to Ma’an News Agency, Israeli warplanes retaliated with airstrikes in Beit Hanoun in the northern Gaza Strip and on a military training ground called Abu Jarad located in the Zaytoun neighborhood of Gaza City.

A witness and security official in Gaza said the grounds were a base of the Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades, the military wing of Hamas.

Palestinian journalist Mohammed Abdul Hay claimed on twitter that the strike left one person wounded.

A Salafist group calling itself the Omar Brigades, which affiliates itself with ISIS, has reportedly taken responsibility for the rocket attacks on Ashkelon.

The Israel Defense Forces have held Hamas accountable for the attacks.

Hamas is the ruling power in the Gaza Strip and is therefore responsible, accountable and culpable for every attack emanating from Gaza," IDF Spokesman, Lt. Col. Peter Lerner said.

Since last summer's war between Hamas and Israel in the Gaza Strip, other military groups in the strip have attempted to undermine Hamas’ rule by carrying out sporadic rocket attack on Israel.

Hamas has reportedly stepped up measures to reduce rocket attacks emanating from the strip and repress the rise of militants belonging to "Islamic extremist groups."

Friday’s rocket fire marked the eleventh rocket to hit Israel since January, according to the IDF.

Meanwhile, the Palestinian Center for Human Rights have counted 27 incidents of Israeli shootings, arrests and incursions into Gaza territory.

This included 18 shootings on land and at sea that left nine Palestinians injured, PCHR reported.
