A rally originating from Yasser Arafat Square in the city center of Ramallah was organized on May 11 in support of the political prisoners currently on hunger strike.
While the city center was relatively quiet, it was decorated with pictures of political prisoners, Palestinian flags, and a tent set-up to show solidarity with more than 1,000 Palestinian prisoners on hunger strike in Israeli prisons.
Some demonstrators then marched to the Beit El settlement, where a checkpoint is located, and violent clashes broke out with Israeli forces. During this confrontation the Israeli military fired rubber-coated and live bullets along with tear gas canisters, and sprayed protesters with skunk water. According to the Ministry of Health two protestors were injured by the Israeli military, although reports by Ma'an News Agency put that number at approximately 11.
Political prisoners on hunger strike asked for a day of solidarity for this Thursday which marked the 25th day of hunger strike to ask for basic rights such as more family visits, better healthcare, and an end to the practice of administrative detention.
