At least seven Palestinians have been killed and over 30 more injured after Israeli forces opened fire on a demonstration in the eastern Gaza Strip.

Hundreds of protesters attempted to approach the border fence which separates the Gaza Strip from Israel at a point east of Gaza City, near Khan Younis.

Ma’an News Agency reports that Israeli forces shot and killed Shadi Hussam Dawla, 20, Ahmad al-Harbawi, 20, and Abed al-Wahidi, 20, east of the al-Shujaiyeh neighborhood of Gaza City.

Muhammad al-Raqeb, 15, and Moussa Abu Elayyan, 22 were shot and killed by Israeli forces near Khan Younis.

The deaths in Gaza have come after weeks of deadly violence across Israel and the West Bank. The demonstration in Gaza is reported to be in support of Palestinians in the occupied West Bank and Jerusalem amidst the recent spate of violence.

Many believe the recent upsurge in violence has signalled the start of a popular uprising, or intifada.

Hamas’ leader in Gaza, Ismail Haniyeh, has labelled the recent unrest in the region an intifada.

On Friday, Hanieyh stated, “we are calling for the strengthening and increasing of the intifada. It is the only path that will lead to liberation. Gaza will fulfil its role in the Jerusalem intifada and it is more than ready for confrontation.”
