Israeli troops shoot, kill teen in Duheisha refugee camp

Israeli soldiers shot and killed a Palestinian teenager during a predawn arrest raid Tuesday in Bethlehem’s Duheisha refugee camp, local media reported. 

Jihad Shehada al-Jaafari, 19, was shot and killed while standing on the roof of his family home near the main road of the camp, witnesses told Ma’an News Agency

Israeli forces reportedly opened fire with live ammunition in the densely populated refugee camp following clashes with camp residents during a predawn arrest rad.

Medics reportedly said the teenager died of internal bleeding, and witnesses at the scene said Israeli forces stopped ambulances from reaching his body. 

An Israeli army spokeswoman told local media that, upon arriving to the camp, the troops were attacked by people throwing stones and 'incendiary devices.’ One soldier was reportedly injured after being hit with a Molotov cocktail. 

“After trying in vain to disperse the crown of attackers our forces felt in danger and opened fire at the leader of the rioters, who was hit,” the spokeswoman said. 

Al-Jaafari’s funeral will be held on Tuesday after midday prayers. Mourners will perform noon prayers at the main mosque in the Duheisha camp before laying the 19-year-old to rest at the nearby Martyrs Courtyard.  

The Duheisha refugee camp, established over 60 years ago by the United Nations, is home to nearly 13,000 people.
