As part of a visit to the region, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry met with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu Tuesday.

Following his meeting with Abbas in Ramallah, Kerry declared that the U.S. is "committed to two states with two people, living side by side in peace and security."

He continued, "I know that the situation for Palestinians in the West Bank, in Jerusalem, in Gaza is, at this moment, very dire, that there are extraordinary concerns, obviously, about the violence."

During the meeting, Abbas restated the demands of his meetings with Kerry in Amman and New York, including appeals for “international protection” for Palestinians against Israeli soldier and settler violence.

Kerry met with Israeli PM Netanyahu earlier in the day, and stated that Israel has the right to protect itself from “terrorism.” Before the meeting, he said, "it is very clear to us that the terrorism, these acts of terrorism which have been taking place, deserve the condemnation that they are receiving."

According to Haaretz, during the meeting, Netanyahu sought U.S. recognition for Israel’s West Bank settlements. Kerry rejected the appeal, and Deputy State Department Spokesman, Mark Toner, stated that "every U.S. administration since 1967...has opposed Israeli settlement activity. This administration has been no different and will be no different.”

During the meeting, Netanyahu told Kerry that the security situation in the West Bank would remain unaltered until levels of violence decreased.
