A Palestinian man wounded at least five passengers during a stabbing spree on a Tel Aviv bus Wednesday morning, before being shot in the leg and taken into custody by a passing prison guard.

The assailant, a 23-year-old male from the West Bank city of Tulkarem who reportedly entered Israel illegally, boarded the number 40 Dan bus in Tel Aviv armed with knife and stabbed the driver and what could be up to a dozen other passengers before fleeing the scene. An Israeli prison guard who happened to be in the area chased the suspect down, shot him in the leg and apprehended him shortly after the incident.

Five people were moderately to severely wounded, while four were lightly injured, Israeli police spokeswoman Luba Samri told Ma’an News Agency, citing emergency services at the scene.

In a statement released by his office shortly after the attack, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu directly blamed the Palestinian Authority for the Wednesday’s stabbings.

“The attack in Tel Aviv is the direct result of the poisonous incitement and spread by the Palestinian Authority toward the Jews and their state. The same terror tries to harm us in Paris, Brussels, and everywhere.”

“The ones who rushed to praise this attack are Hamas, Abu Mazen’s partners in the unity government,” he continued, using a nickname to refer to PA President Mahmoud Abbas. “This is the same Hamas that announced they would sue Israeli in the International Criminal Court in The Hague.”

“For the incitement, and for the dangerous move in the Hague court, Abu Mazen is responsible,” argued Netanyahu’s press release.

Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman went as far as to condemn the entire Palestinian and Arab Israeli leadership, arguing that those behind Wednesday’s attack, “stand behind the Rahat riots and the Jerusalem attacks: Abu Mazen, [Ismail] Haniyeh, Raed Saleh, Haneen Zoabi, Ahmed Tibi and their partners. It’s all part of the same process of undermining Israel’s right to exist as a Jewish state.”

In mentioning the Rahat riots, Lieberman was referring to the recent spate of unrest in the Negev town of Rahat, where Bedouin youth have clashed with Israeli police over the past week due to police violence that has left two dead in its wake.

“It doesn’t matter to them if it’s Judea and Samaria, the Negev, That Galilee, Tel Aviv or Jerusalem – it is all the part of the same branch which aims to eliminate the Jewish state,” Lieberman added.

Israeli Minister of Economy Naftali Bennett reiterated a similar argument, again placing full responsibility for the Tel Aviv bus stabbing on Abbas.

“The man responsible for the Tel Aviv attack is the same person marching with world leaders in Paris last week” Bennett said. “When Abbas incites day and night against the Jews on television, when he glorifies and gives cash prizes to murderers of Jews,” Bennett added, “he makes himself the dealer of knives, and the terrorists are just his agents.”

While Abbas has yet to comment on the attack, Izzat al-Risheq, a member of Hamas political bureau in Gaza, labeled the attack a “heroic act.”

“The attack carried out this morning is a bold, heroic act and a natural response to the crimes of the occupation and terrorism against the Palestinian people,” al-Risheq wrote on his Facebook page.
