Last Friday, activists set up a tent camp near the Ma'ale Adumim settlement, in protest to Israeli plans to annex the settlement and against Trump's pledge to move the American embassy to Jerusalem. This area is known as E1, and has long been part of an Israeli plan to create a contiguous urban bloc between Ma'ale Adumim and Jerusalem, which would isolate East Jerusalem from the rest of the West Bank, effectively cutting the West Bank - and a future Palestinian state - into two parts.

Palestinian Bedouins living in E1 have been subjected to a demolition campaign that only intensified in 2016.

The protest camp was soon dismantled by the Israeli border police, and six activists were arrested.

A proposal to apply Israeli law to Ma'ale Adumin was due to be submitted to a Knesset committee on Sunday, but the vote was postponed, according to reports, until a meeting between Netanyahu and Trump.

Since then, Israel has approved construction and planning for 2,500 new settler homes in the West Bank.
