On November 5, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu approved a bill authorising the death sentence for Palestinian prisoners who were accused of killing Israeli civilians or soldiers.

The approval goes against the advice of Israel’s Security Service, Shin Bet Chief, Nadav Argaman.

Netanyahu declared earlier in the year: “The logic of this project is simple: the assassin who looks forward to his murder will not end his days in prison and will be executed.”

The government bill will now be examined by the Israeli Knesset Constitution Committee to prepare the bill for a first reading vote.

This law was already adopted on January 2018, with 52 votes to 49, but Argaman and the Government Counsel, Avichai Mandelblit blocked the law from passing.

It is supported by Yisrael Beytenu, and defended by the party's president, Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman, who declared “it's a powerful deterrent to terrorists.”

The law will give the right to the State of Israel to execute Palestinian activists accused of “terrorism.”

Currently, the death sentence is subject to the unanimous consent of three judges of a court martial, under restricted conditions since 1954.

If the law is adopted, the majority would be sufficient.

Moreover, a law already exists allowing the death sentence for the crimes against humanity, genocide and treason.

For 80 years, only two death sentences were pronounced.

The most famous one, is the death sentence of Adolf Eichman.

He was high placed under the Nazi regime III Reich, responsible for the logistics of the "final solution," found in Argentina and executed on June 1, 1962.

Meir Tobianski, an IDF officer, was also executed for treason. He was believed to have transmitted information about Israeli positions to the Jordanians.

A year later, the man was acquitted posthumously and announced in the Israeli military hierarchy.

On his tomb is inscribed the epitaph "Killed by mistake.”

Since 1967, around 850, 000 Palestinians have been arrested and 210 Palestinian prisoners were killed, countering the respect of the prisoner rights.
